The key to staying motivated is making the mission, and passion for the mission, a centerpiece of the organization's core values. The key to a sustainable nonprofit mission is to always remember the “why.” Put your core values on display, go over them with your team and share positive examples when they are displayed in a team member's actions. Our people are one of our greatest assets and we owe it to them to make their development a top priority. During regular check-ins, we discuss each team member's long-term goals, and wherever possible, I try to offer opportunities for strategy development and project work that can support their individual goals. True motivation is intrinsic, and nonprofit leaders need to ensure there is emotional breathing space for individuals and teams to rediscover, aspire and dream. ![]() Yet, we can nurture a culture of self-awareness, resilience and self-care through leadership. Today more than ever the toll upon leaders and teams in the nonprofit sector is daunting. It also means giving them an internal path to growth. This means supporting and recognizing everyone as individually as possible. Ask what they think, want and need and then act on what you hear. All employees want to feel that they, not just the population served, are valued by their employer. The good feeling from do-gooding isn't enough for employees anymore. Besides tracking success metrics with outreach and nonprofit visibility, we also have a quarterly team event to celebrate the success. Seeing the real results of what we've accomplished is so rewarding and motivating. Each quarter, we look at measurable success and see how things have improved. In addition to constantly showing appreciation, we like to keep track of our progress over the last quarter. It can also repair and rejuvenate the team with new energies and fresh perspectives. This approach of solving a problem through experimentation may not be easy to orchestrate, but it does create engagement and openness. The most effective way is to nurture experimentation by making an adult playground to solve the team's problems. It is tempting to just hit this topic once a year and consider it covered, but it demands repetition. If you keep this rhythm of constantly reviewing the mission, vision and values, it can make a big impact on culture. Hold monthly gatherings for all team members with a standardized template for internal reporting, external updates and methodical intentional segments focused on the organization's mission, vision and values. The People Team plans the annual family picnic for staff and their families as well as anniversary recognitions, departmental appreciation days and holiday costume and door-decorating competitions. These town halls offer a sense of community and show we are listening. Internal and external guest experts discuss topics important to employees and answer their questions. ![]() In addition to my weekly email updates, we hold monthly virtual town halls where I often act as the host/moderator. The best way to keep teams connected and motivated is to communicate meaningful messages as often as possible.
